Piper McLean by andiree Piper McLean by andiree
I had a pretty big rant on Tumblr regarding how the features of different ethnicity have been maddeningly pushed aside. Much of the fan-art these days depicts characters with different skin colors, yet the same typical white person's face. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG-- I am aware that drawing for different races can be difficult. (I got into a big argument over this.) However, that should inspire you to practice drawing these characters (or anyone!) in accordance to their ethnicity.

Post-rant, I got a request to draw Piper with all her Cherokee glory, and so here she is. High cheekbones, terracotta skin, a long, thin nose, and heavy, almond eyes. Though I gave her dark hair for the sake of sticking to the culture, it could be said that her hair is lighter.

In every picture I'm in, I have a different eye color. But this is by far my favorite that I've seen

I think that a lot of people focus too much on the fact Aphrodite is white and they go "Hmm, okay, let's make her look white yet give her slightly darker skin." I don't know why people find it so hard to look up references for those of different races. Look up tutorials, look at pictures of those you are friends with, people watch, and ask people how to improve. I don't know, people just really annoy me with non-correct PoC features.

The thing about the godly parents... I don't tend to use them in regard to their demigod children. Their appearances have no strict permanence. Therefore, when it comes to drawing the characters from PJO, I try to base it 90% on their mortal parents, and the rest on slight godly-parent related details.

No, no, I get what you mean, just that they take the whole "Rick said she's biracial. He said she gets bullied for being half Cherokee and half white. Ooh, let's make her white with slightly darker skin." Seriously PJO fandom, that's what it looks like for someone who's a fourth Cherokee (my grandfather) not someone who's half. I don't get people sometimes.
Anyway, I love love LOVE racially accurate Piper so much. It's nice to see people draw her accurately.
